StoryCorps
Interview
April 23, 2011
The Chattahoochee Unit of The
Herb Society of America sponsored a StoryCorps interview between
two of its members, preserving a conversation between two friends
who share a common interest in the use and delight of herb
gardening.
StoryCorps is an oral history
project, pairing participants with an opportunity to record a
legacy in sound for future generations. This recording will be
publicly archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library
of Congress.
Jean Johnson Givens shared her
lifetime experiences of growing up in Druid Hills in DeKalb
County, Georgia with Tracy Minjauw, both members of the
Chattahoochee Unit of The Herb Society of America. Jean was born
February 22, 1914 and was raised in the Atlanta community on a
family farm that was occupied by the Johnson family prior to the
Civil War. It is now surrounded by numerous public parks and was
developed with the effort of some of Atlanta's leading families,
including Coca-Cola founder Asa Candler. Druid Hills includes the
main campus of Emory University, along with a string of parks
along Ponce de Leon Avenue designed by Frederick Law
Olmsted.
